Game Review - Doom 3

So, you're on Mars. It's your first day in a new place which turns out to be a scientific research facility. Scientists are messing around with teleportation, biological research and advanced weapons design. Some crazy stuff happens and all hell brakes loose. Demons and zombies galore and trust me, they don't want hugs and kisses. Time to look hell right in the face and show them who is boss. Lock and load.

Id Software have been at this quite some time and this instalment in the series has not disappointed. They have successfully mixed horror aspects and a captivating storyline into the gameplay. The environment and enemies are perfect works of art using the award winning Id Tech 4 game engine. The protagonist has no background to allow you to fill his shoes instantly. This game is your experience and will haunt you forever.

The Doom series has always been close to me. I remember when I was only a kid, probably 6 or 7, playing this game only allowed for over 18's. I read the manual intensively to learn all about the demons from hell and find their weak points. It easily captivated my attention, which is amazingly hard to do for kids my age. Doom 3 keeps this idea alive by giving you random radio transmissions throughout the game, allowing you to build up this database of knowledge to use against the horde from hell. I could not help but explore the massive amount of content scattered throughout the game that builds a truly terrifying storyline.

Multiplayer is mediocre at best, don't even try it. They clearly just added this feature because they think games need this nowadays, which they don't. Doom 3 focuses gameplay on going through the campaign and facing the weird and evil events that happen. This Windows PC game has been ported to everything from Linux and Mac OS X to the Xbox just so everyone on the planet can experience this amazing story. The Xbox version also supports a two player campaign mode which is a nice feature for those who need to hold hands with someone while exploring.

After watching a few scary movies, I decided to go back to the drawing board and find out why Id decided to make Doom 3 into a scary game. PC gaming is all about the diversity in graphics and sound. There is a lot of individuality in people's PC home setup and the equipment allows everyone to dive and immerse themselves fully into games in a way that they couldn't do on a console. Some people like to use headphones, others 5.1 surround sound systems but overall the consoles cannot create this user specific environment. It is this customized environment which leads to the scariest moments and an 'on the edge' gameplay. I definitely recommend playing this game on the PC.

So whether you go around corners in a blaze of gunfire or you are like me and slowly creep around with a torch, Doom 3 is sure to captivate everyone. There is also an expansion for those of you hungry for more exploration into the depths of hell. All I can say is good luck on your adventure and enjoy it while it lasts.

Beauty: 5 / 5
